I have to admit, I got a little misty-eyed tonight when Chad and Sybil (and Jeb and Matt) presented Oxfam with one of those giant novelty checks for $100,000 for the stoves project.

So proud of team SR/CAC.

The Most Magical Place in Upstate New York
Who wants to go with me?

Pittsburgh Penguins in Halloween Costumes When They Were Kids
For some reason, my favorite part of this is not any of the photos/costumes, but the way Max seems to be sort of whispering about it. Sid too, to a lesser extent. Was this a secret? Did they have to be quiet because there was a meeting on the other side of the room? Any explanation makes me laugh.

Attack of the Penguins
I was in the middle of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay when I first saw this, so it was especially awesome.

This American Life 394: Bait & Switch
I really enjoyed the first story in this episode. It doesn't really have an ending or a punchline, but the idea is so amusing that it doesn't really need one.

How the ambient sound at Walt Disney World works
Fascinating!

In Civil War, Woman Fought Like A Man For Freedom
Also fascinating! I won't "spoil" it, but I was touched by the part about how she was buried.

Fake AP Stylebook:
I enjoy this whole Twitter account, but this post especially.

3rd December, 2009. 10:52 pm. A Modest Proposal

I was talking about this the other day, and just thinking about it again in the shower: In the decade I've lived in Boston, I've considered myself both a Bostonian and a Pittsburgher. A Bostburgher? A Pittstonian?

In those same 10 years, the cities' sports teams have won nine championships: Three for the Patriots, two each for the Steelers and Red Sox, one each for the Penguins and Celtics. Plus several assorted conference and division championships even in years they didn't win it all. So clearly, I bring an aura, or good sports vibes, to my cities.

[There is no hope for the Pirates.]

Anyway, the modest proposal in the title is this: provide me with modest lodging, good food, and a reasonable stipend for spending money, and I'll move to your city and bring my sports mojo with me. Who's in?

While we're talking about local sports (of course), Laura sent me this, which had me dying:
Pittsburgh School District Leads Nation In Ability To Spell 'Roethlisberger'
Clients in Southwestern Pennsylvania appreciate, above all, a lawyer with a working knowledge of how to spell the names of the entire 2005 Super Bowl team. "Anyone can go to law school and pass a bar exam, but knowing that there is a silent 'h' after the 'w' in Cowher? Well, that takes somebody special."

And then there is this, from last Saturday. THOSE HATS! (Give it a little time to load; it's pretty long for a gif.)
